Sportsfest closing rites held: West dominates 2011 CFC Sporstfest

In the spirit of coming together for His greater glory, camaraderie, and fair play, the 2011 Couples for Christ (CFC) Sportsfest culminated in a day-long ceremony held in Yiu Chu Kang Sports Hall, August 28.

With the theme “He Rose: Servant and Proud”, the sportsfest featured nine (9) sports and 23 events that ran through every weekend, public holiday, and selected weekdays starting August 6.

West Chapter reigned as the overall champion after amassing a total of 995 points and bagging 14 championships titles in various categories. East Chapter garnered a total of 945 points and nine (9) championship titles.

The culminating ceremony kicked off with the parade of heroes where representatives from various ministries donned their He R

ose shirts (pink for East and purple for West). The symbolic torch relay participated by each ministry formally opened the ceremony. Leila Belle Canlas represented the Kids for Christ (KFC), Bro. Miguel de Jesus for Youth for Christ (YFC), Bro. Andy Co for Singles for Christ (SFC), Sis. Liza Reyes for Handmaids of the Lord (HOLD), Bro. Ian Flores for Servants of the Lord (SOLD) and Bro. Jonar Lusung for CFC in the torch relay. Bro William Villaviray, CFC C1 chapter head, led the opening prayer and praisefest.

After the praisefest, National Council Director Bro. Patrick Thong recapitulated Michael Jordan’s journey to basketball stardom in his opening remarks. He emphasized the importance of perseverance in sports as Jordan did and in living the Christian faith. He closed the opening remarks by encouraging the participants to play for the win and to aim for the prize in a fair play and amicable competition.

Before the game began, men's basketball co-organiser Bro. Ronald Sison led the oath of sportsmanship. This was then followed by the inaugural Babies for Christ (BFC) Competition where babies of CFC members flaunted in their superheroes costumes. James Arzen Monasterial who depicted Superman captured the BFC title. He captivated the judges composed of Bro. Willy Ruiz (Chapter Head – SFC West 2), Sis. Mae Remo (Chapter Head – SFC West 2), Bro. Andy Co (Chapter Head – SFC West 1), and Sis. Ems Ramos (Unit Head – SFC West 2). BFC runner-up Catherine Sotto who portrayed Wonder Woman won the People’s Choice Award for garnering the most number of online votes.

After the awarding of BFC winners, the remaining sports began.

West Chapter capped its domination of the 2011 CFC Sportsfest by clutching three (3) titles out of the four (4) games on the final day. West ruled in futsal (3-2), youth basketball (29-15), and women’s basketball (10-5).

East Chapter defended the men’s basketball championship title with a four-point lead (73-69). West gave their best to pull the rug from East, but the latter proved that the former's best efforts were not good enough.

Bro. Conan Dans from East Chapter was judged Most Valuable Player (MVP) for contributing a total of 26 points in men’s basketball.

West also notched the cheerdance competition. The panel of judges for the cheerdance competition consisted of Bro. Rolly Unas and Sis Mabee Unas from the Family Ministry, Bro. Theodore and Sis. Ramona Olsen from the Evangelization Ministry, and Sis. Karla Valencia who used to be part of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Salinggawi Dance Troupe.

After all the games ended, national SFC coordinators Bro. Dick and Sis. Ellaine Cercado presented the awards to the winners. Refer to the table below for the list of champions in each event.

The sportsfest formally closed when Bro. Rolly Unas gave the closing remarks. The ceremony ended with thanksgiving and praisefest.
